The technology industry is rapidly expanding, and many young people want to work in it.
However, with so many different career paths available, it can be difficult for tech newcomers to decide which path to take.
In my few years of being in tech and around techies in Nigeria, I’ve come to realise that many Newbies in tech usually find it difficult to choose a career. Most times they ask questions like
- “How do I know if tech is right for me?”,
- “What is the best tech career to get into?”
- “What is the easiest tech career to learn?”
- “What is the highest paid tech?” etc.
In this article, we will discuss some of these questions and also share some tips on how tech newbies can choose a career path in tech.

It’s no surprise that many people are considering a career in technology as technology continues to evolve and become more integrated into our daily lives.
However, the decision to pursue a career in technology should not be taken lightly. It requires a significant time, effort, and financial investment, and not everyone is cut out for the demands of the tech industry.
If you Want to know if tech is right for you, then your answer to following questions should be YES.
- Do you have Passion for technology?
- Do you have Aptitude for problem-solving?
- Are you Willing to learn and adapt?
- Do you have a Collaborative mindset?
- Does Tech Align with personal goals and values?
- Are you genuinely curious about how technology works?
- Do you get excited about the possibilities that new technologies can provide?
- Do you spend hours tinkering with gadgets and software, or keeping up with the latest tech news?

How to Choose a Career Path in Tech; Practical steps
- Consider Your Interests
The first step in deciding on a career path in technology is to identify your interests. Programming, data analysis, cybersecurity, web development, and other areas of technology are just a few examples.
Think about what you enjoy doing, think about your passion and things that interests you. For instance, you can’t be going into data science if you dislike mathematics.
Take some time to think about what you enjoy doing, what you’re good at, and what you want to learn more about.
If you’re interested in programming, you might want to experiment with different programming languages and try out some coding projects.
If you’re interested in data analysis, you should research statistics and data visualization.
You can narrow your career options and choose a path that aligns with your strengths and passions by determining your interests.
- Research Different Career Paths
Once you’ve identified your interests, it’s time to research different career paths in tech. There are many different jobs in tech, each with its own set of skills and requirements. Some common career paths include:
- Software Developer: Develops and maintains software applications using programming languages.
- Data Analyst: Analyzes and interprets data to help businesses make informed decisions.
